Stephen and I are having a few friends over tomorrow night for the Season 4 premiere of BIG LOVE (which I may be reviewing regularly on ____) and in time-honored tradition, I decided to make lentil soup.

Here’s an ‘action shot’ of the prep work.

Here I am stirring the onions and carrots. At this point in my lentil-soup career, I kind of ‘wing it,’ which means I probably made 3-4 times as much as the original recipe calls for.

Because I’m a rather lazy cook — to the extent I don’t do it very regularly — I like to make a LOT when I do, so I feel like I’m really getting my ‘money’s worth.’ (Also, I’m getting my novel back from my editor on Monday, which means I won’t really have any time for anything but that for the next ___ weeks).

After the soup was on, I went over to the house to check on ‘things.’ The sun was blinding in the cloudless, azure sky.

Here’s the east side of Broadway, heading south into the 150s.

The house was empty but serene in the bronze light of the fading afternoon.

The Christmas cactus was in bloom.

Back at the apartment, the soup was on simmer and the sun was setting.

Another Saturday faded away.
