On Friday night I was chosen to announce the 2010 ‘Spruce of the Year’ Awards.

Below are the three nominees for 2010 Spruce of the Year, based on ‘sprucial excellence’ in the 2009 gardening season:

Featuring some of the darkest needles of any spruce — it has been compared to green onyx — Picea abies ‘Hillside Upright’ had a stunning performance in the Washington Height garden in 2009.

With a uniform green tone and a tight columnar growth habit, this Norway Spruce saw exquisite development in the 2009 gardening season.

The duo-toned needles of the Weeping Serbian Spruce — a celadon green over a gray underside — is combined with an exceedingly graceful habit that is both narrow and weeping.

[Seriously, the pix above of me are from the ‘Tumblr Reads‘ event on Friday night, which was a big success and a lot of fun — click through for a really cool stop-action video of the entire night.]
