On the way to Costco, Stephen and I stopped in at the garden to gather our strength. Actually, it was more for my benefit, because I’m often on the verge of a nervous breakdown in Costco, although it’s true that many things there are cheaper and fresher than anywhere else you could find them, at least around New York City.

The dahlias continue to be the highlight of our garden this August.

We arrived at Costco and I put on my ‘game face.’

At the olive oil, I remembered the ridiculously named ‘restaurant’ — EVOO (pronounced evu) — that was the winning or losing team in the recent Top Chef episode of ‘restaurant wars.’

I felt loads of cynicism as I considered the idea that ‘disaster families’ in the modern era must rely on corporate beneficence because our governments are often largely incapable of responding to the needs of their people.

On the way home we stopped to get gas. In lieu of a ‘gallons of hope’ program, Shell offers GSTV, or Gas Station Television. As I watched, I wondered if I might be able to get a spot promoting my novel on GSTV.

Back in the garden, all was sunny and forgotten.
