A Short Story about a Cat and a Primrose

One day a cat and a primrose met for coffee. “The thing nobody talks about when you’re young,” said the cat, “is how it never really gets easier. It’s like the more you learn, the more you realize how clueless you used to be, which is comforting in the sense that you’re no longer as clueless as you used to be, but not exactly comforting in the sense that it’s often too late to fix anything. It’s kind of like realizing that you walked into a pit of quicksand except you’re already up to your shoulders. Or maybe just your chest, but in any case too far down to reach out and grab a branch or to walk around it, ‘it’ being the quicksand not the branch, which is what you should have done in the first place, and even worse, probably what everyone who knew you told you to do and you ignored them because you thought that they were all stupid.”

When the flower failed to respond, the cat took a breath. “I mean, I’m not sure I’m explaining myself very well…do you have any idea what I’m talking about?”

“Not really,” said the flower, “but this coffee is really good, don’t you think?”
