Flight of the Columnar Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple’)

Our columnar purple beech is usually one of the last trees to leaf out, and this year it’s almost a month early. (That it’s more established could also be a factor.) The new leaves look like little (or actually, large) translucent insect wings, but soon they’ll be shiny and purple, soaking up the hot summer sun.
