One of the most beautiful parts of Washington Heights — or for that matter, Manhattan — is the area around between 155th and 160th Streets, where Riverside Drive splits off into the Old Riverside Drive — which then splits again at 158th Street into an upper and lower section — weaving up through some magnificent apartment buildings before rejoining Riverside Drive four or five blocks to the north. Without the grid, this part of the city feels very European.

On Saturday, Stephen and I noticed that the old metal guardrail between the upper and lower Riverside Drives has been replaced by a new wooden one.

Seriously, how amazing does this new wooden guardrail look?

It’s often the little changes that make the most difference in the appearance of a neighborhood.

Wooden guardrails, is what I’m saying.
