
On Sunday afternoon, Stephen and I decided to walk up Sylvan Terrace, which is one of the oldest blocks in Washington Heights.

I’ve written about this block before, but it’s one of those miraculous throwbacks to a different era that you occasionally find in New York City. My understanding is that the houses were originally built as servant quarters for the Morris-Jumel mansion, and were later notorious brothels (which is how they were portrayed a few seasons ago on the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”)

Mostly it’s a great place to escape the present, which on some days is more than enough
