The Peony Project (War Zone Substitutes)

Last year we had to take out the tree peonies from our garden; the other plants and trees were getting too big, and as difficult as it was to admit, there wasn’t enough light.

I’m sure I’ve already discussed how one of the “rookie mistakes” we made when planting our garden was to put in too many trees and plants.

We basically created a “war zone” for light and space. On the other hand, perhaps that’s just the nature of all life on earth.

This year we bought some peonies from the corner florist; although they don’t offer them on the street, we learned that if you ask the guy for a particular flower, he will “see what he can do” before disappearing into the basement.

I like to imagine fields of peonies under Washington Heights; some will get picked and sold, if you are lucky, will open as beautifully as ours.
