December is a good time to visit Fort Tryon Park, even if it’s cold and raining.

Everything is a bit skeletal and muted — the landscape dominated by browns and grays — but what green remains seems that much more vibrant. The plants converse in quiet, serious whispers.

The sedum fills in the crevices of the rocks.

The clumps of heather float like clouds on the horizon.

The fallen deciduous leaves seep through the living into the soil.

Under the earth, roots are slowly twisting, gathering strength for the slow eruption of spring.
