The Kitten Project (Week Two): Let’s Sleep Like the Future Doesn’t Exist

During the second week of their new lives, the kittens mostly slept in a heap, almost as if they were a single organism instead of six. They did probably double in size, however, so that each one is officially a plump little ball of fur. They are seriously cute, especially when they yawn.

The mother — whom we’ve named “Clio” after the Greek Muse (Κλειώ) — remained extremely attentive to her charges, making sure that each one had enough to eat and was properly cleaned and whatever else needed to happen.

Unlike me, they were remarkably unconcerned about the future. Were they “living in the moment” or had their therapist prescribed a very effective antidepressant?

Clio occasionally took a few minutes away so that she could get some attention.

Just a kitten herself, she also likes to play.

Meanwhile, out in the garden, our other cats kept watch for flying snakes, knowing that at any moment one of these evil creatures could swoop in and devour one or more of the sleeping kittens.

As usual, it was a tense period marked by waiting and reflection.

Every day I went to work and missed the old twin towers, which had been replaced by this new fortress of bellicosity. Except surprising development: “I <3 lil kittens!” — One World Trade Center.

“Let us pray for the kittens” — the FLW statue, after learning that they would be receiving their first checkup this week.

The blue flowers grew increasingly intense.

The orchid tried to reassure me — “everything is going to be okay” — and we agreed that, for a while, it would be enough to believe.

If you are interested in adopting a kitten or know someone who is, please get in touch (keeping in mind that the kittens won’t be ready for approximately 7-8 weeks).
