As the year comes to an end, I’m trying to focus on a few of the goods things about 2024, like the reflection of the George Washington Bridge in the calm waters of the Hudson River. Having spent much of the year injured, it feels almost miraculous to be running again.

And the sense that, even six days into winter, we’ve turned a corner. Every day is a little brighter.

I love looking at the train tracks as I cross back to Riverside Drive on the pedestrian bridge they built a few years ago at 153rd Street.

Living in Washington Heights, there is always the pleasure of ruins, which sometimes I forget.

My friend Mike D sent me a photograph from Vermont taken by wildlife camera he installed near his house. It’s of two dogs he’s never seen before or since, on their way somewhere with a secret purpose, oblivious to the surveillance. He said it was the Best Picture of 2024, and who am I to disagree?

This is the energy I want to bring to 2025. (Happy New Year to all who celebrate!)
