The Morning after the Rains

One thing I’ve noticed about New York City is that on the morning after a night of hard rain, there’s usually not another day of it in store, but a remarkably clean sky. I especially love the way the morning sun looks against the orange bricks. The sidewalks seem to be scrubbed, the air chilled and fresh.

A few years ago my brother was visiting in December and on the day he arrived, it was a horrible downpour, much like yesterday. I remember getting completely soaked as we ran to catch a cab on 34th Street. I assured him that the next day was going to be nice, because it usually was.

As it turned out, the next day was still horrible, which just goes to show how New York City also has a way of breaking your heart.
