True enough, I’m not about to rush around buying tons of expensive presents at this juncture of my life, which though relatively secure nevertheless feels financially precarious in ways that I think most of the 99 percent can identify with. It’s the story of our country these days, and maybe the world. I’m guessing this idea will not be news to anyone.
That said, and as much as I support taxing the wealthiest members of our country, who I’m sure could pick up any of these items with about as much trepidation as most of us feel buying a candy bar, the windows are nevertheless something to behold and admire. In some ways it’s better to know that you can’t really afford any of it, because then you can enjoy the pure aesthetic quality of the display, as if you were looking at a painting instead of a collection of objects.
The trick, I’ve found, is not to dwell too long in front of any particular window, but to walk past quickly and enjoy a more fleeting glimpse, so that you don’t think too much the animals whose fur lines the borders of our vision.
