November Leaves (Garden Reports)

The trees have finally turned in the garden, with shades of yellow and gold being the predominant theme.

In my fantasies, the garden would have more orange and red, but I try not to be too critical.

Particularly since the trees probably feel the same way about me.

The fact is, everyone needs a little help; this climbing hydrangea, for example, failed to climb on the wall we built for it, so we had to install wire.

Now it’s very happy, and we don’t discuss its climbing problem.

The statue wouldn’t appreciate a nervous vine, after all.

Meanwhile, our new oakleaf hydrangea offered up some red that was a bit too vivid, if you know what I’m saying.

We try to be encouraging, though, knowing that new plants can be very insecure and need a few years to adjust before they can show off their colors with the kind of understated elegance we expect from a mature specimen.

The garden is going to sleep happy, which means we can all look forward to waking up in the spring.
